Made in America, Grip All Jaws is used by carvers, sculptors, gourd artists, instrument makers, hobbyists, and a host of others who want to hold work securely and safely.Grip-All Jawshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17068170359099634682noreply@blogger.comBlogger50125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3388589565779140004.post-25297095723789330612012-11-17T22:58:00.001-08:002012-11-24T11:23:54.664-08:00Tools of the Trade Show Pt.2The University of Oregon book store, called the Duck Store even though there were no actual ducks for sale anywhere, has two floors. Part 1 was just the ground floor stuff. Now, we'll show you the lower floor - for the most part.<br />
<br />
But before we go downstairs let's take a bit more of a look upstairs. Marker art is really big nowadays<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy3UR4WvJbywu94bIPcbqnLX9piWjpOTdhjGnVtIFoRoWG2ZerIHsDyagQzwnxR7ftKviDNMdYIFvCGLqg03EasmKpsAjesEDkA__ZmTbPQyJzbimS4DNN3xNsl4Q62crkF4dBbZSNnW9S/s1600/Eugene14.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy3UR4WvJbywu94bIPcbqnLX9piWjpOTdhjGnVtIFoRoWG2ZerIHsDyagQzwnxR7ftKviDNMdYIFvCGLqg03EasmKpsAjesEDkA__ZmTbPQyJzbimS4DNN3xNsl4Q62crkF4dBbZSNnW9S/s200/Eugene14.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One of the finest marker and watercolor artists we've seen is <a href="http://www.brandiyork.com/" target="_blank">Brandi York</a>. Actually she is masterful in many media. Brandi is the sign painter for Trader Joe's. This portrait of a friend of hers is on her post card and the haunting gaze of this girl always attracts attention.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_jQbSfHvjtQZZks1u2HNQS_Jhbqb8WvCZhnrSZkzYTDc62AQT89bW99HO7CXXRXdZBujQaLt0SIiaMjQs5PMu5EmXjcAaCLgNX4A4_RZq580lkXYxKr1XqfQk8z2MxhDpyepoc6Vv48ry/s1600/BYork-A-Laralee.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_jQbSfHvjtQZZks1u2HNQS_Jhbqb8WvCZhnrSZkzYTDc62AQT89bW99HO7CXXRXdZBujQaLt0SIiaMjQs5PMu5EmXjcAaCLgNX4A4_RZq580lkXYxKr1XqfQk8z2MxhDpyepoc6Vv48ry/s200/BYork-A-Laralee.jpg" width="132" /></a> </div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We don't know this girl's name but people would stop and look at the portrait and ask about her. Some would ask if she was OK or what she was so sad about. Brandi assures us that she is fine and was simply sitting for a portrait. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhG51P_ga8toaS81L6TGUcFEe4ca33vYXfpgDtJ4qXOBMdPzn9W27bNt5PucW3dAuDBAxKjsBv_lAupsuc8jSxFr3S6lBv2Khqh79hGamBBBbSB9IcIsaTxbUar4xLByzWbkkc9RRTfMOEn/s1600/Eugene+9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhG51P_ga8toaS81L6TGUcFEe4ca33vYXfpgDtJ4qXOBMdPzn9W27bNt5PucW3dAuDBAxKjsBv_lAupsuc8jSxFr3S6lBv2Khqh79hGamBBBbSB9IcIsaTxbUar4xLByzWbkkc9RRTfMOEn/s200/Eugene+9.jpg" width="200" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBF9MH8tJpRJMnM4iL2-9TW3hG2SfeV7OS2KcawIoqAYCN6WB1rspVMaAgaTXw2QciAEr-TvpXP0wqt0gApYBu3Q0PC3bnabiMw8by8HJJBQgCPXXBelVUu3eUD0DctS8x5-nszoMKcLCL/s1600/Eugene+10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBF9MH8tJpRJMnM4iL2-9TW3hG2SfeV7OS2KcawIoqAYCN6WB1rspVMaAgaTXw2QciAEr-TvpXP0wqt0gApYBu3Q0PC3bnabiMw8by8HJJBQgCPXXBelVUu3eUD0DctS8x5-nszoMKcLCL/s200/Eugene+10.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
And Manga marker artist <a href="http://ilikemarkers.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Marianne Walker</a> was demonstrating the line of <a href="http://www.copicmarker.com/" target="_blank">Copic Markers</a>. She also worked with <a href="http://www.beepaper.com/" target="_blank">Bee Papers of Beaverton Oregon </a>to develop a line of Aquabee paper especially for markers. Most papers will suck markers dry with a vengeance but not this new paper thanks to Marianne. Check out her blog. <br />
<br />
And since we are now downstairs, this is pastel artist <a href="http://www.danchen.com/" target="_blank">Dan Chen</a> and one of the best. He specializes in wildlife but also does other subjects. He was working on this painting on Wednesday.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQuw0TR8oKCI9Qmbt0YOHY5LoFXPKHmiJBxHOb-D65zriMIdM1DVO0QLxTb-Cl3oz1PVFrfNsrRm7PYIgAIv2JYM-8PHy8gh3PdLeL1v8IduL67DFDGVPlkOOJy-AuI6uydfQO9QcH6J0q/s1600/Eugene+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQuw0TR8oKCI9Qmbt0YOHY5LoFXPKHmiJBxHOb-D65zriMIdM1DVO0QLxTb-Cl3oz1PVFrfNsrRm7PYIgAIv2JYM-8PHy8gh3PdLeL1v8IduL67DFDGVPlkOOJy-AuI6uydfQO9QcH6J0q/s200/Eugene+3.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Dan paints in pastels and pastel pencil on industrial abrasive paper. He likes the colors and the way it works with the pastels. We have subsequently found that a couple of abrasive companies make a line just for pastel artists. Here is the finished work.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoWuxvo-NIYbBus9d3rS6UEOSED4w4_E_znTJD1VxvtB8-kZy_TdIS_QHoOeCYuzd96Tpuvg0Zh5cqUju8TXIUOjE-ewXX5bqhY9GzzbxERXY3go5-TR4Py4wb457Yvv7xzUrYLlY5qGz_/s1600/Eugene+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoWuxvo-NIYbBus9d3rS6UEOSED4w4_E_znTJD1VxvtB8-kZy_TdIS_QHoOeCYuzd96Tpuvg0Zh5cqUju8TXIUOjE-ewXX5bqhY9GzzbxERXY3go5-TR4Py4wb457Yvv7xzUrYLlY5qGz_/s200/Eugene+6.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And this is a chicken that lives with a friend of Dan's. He describes the pigeon as the chicken's girlfriend. Dan says they are inseparable friends.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfDmYrkTrMo53R-E_a2GNKM535azJKcQp093bXexihKGpL63X3pGoTGHDarUZ_oAY4nRBxGMue0AFK0TOAHct7FIqcD9gG8ITSFxzxA0cKd5tN0wkZI_cHMk0tPKBPhkRF9mszTq2pG0ud/s1600/Eugene+7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="126" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfDmYrkTrMo53R-E_a2GNKM535azJKcQp093bXexihKGpL63X3pGoTGHDarUZ_oAY4nRBxGMue0AFK0TOAHct7FIqcD9gG8ITSFxzxA0cKd5tN0wkZI_cHMk0tPKBPhkRF9mszTq2pG0ud/s200/Eugene+7.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All in all we had a great time at the Tools of the Trade Show. And many thanks to the University of Oregon Duck Store for their help. The weather was wonderful and Eugene is a great place to get a fantastic breakfast - thanks to <a href="http://studioonecafe.com/Home_Page.html" target="_blank">Studio One Cafe</a> for helping us wake up each day and to the Campus Inn for a very pleasant and restful stay (thanks for the use of the chair, Sheila).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Duck Store is open to the public and they carry the Orbital Easel - that's the important thing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

It was at the Duck Store which is the book store at the University of Oregon in Eugene.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We had a <em>tiny</em> space right inside the front door. Even so, Hilary was able to sit and draw and do calligraphy. People really loved watching her do that. It helps that we developed the tripod base.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
RP was at the "Official" booth farther back in the store. Cindy Black of KC Sales Group in Seattle helped out and thanks to her.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The featured artist of the show was a watercolorist named <a href="http://www.ronstocke.com/" target="_blank">Ron Stocke</a> who was there with his wife <a href="http://www.ursulastockeart.com/" target="_blank">Ursala</a>. Ursala is an oil painter. Check out their works and check out the video on Ron's Workshops/Videos page. Ron did the painting for this year's poster in the first picture.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There was a 25% off sale during the show and we stocked up on paper. There was a giant pile of Aquabee paper in the middle of the floor including a nice paper made of hemp. Well, this is Eugene.</div>

The workshop was on <span class="st">Creating Radiant Flowers in Colored Pencil and was presented by Gary Greene, probably the world's preeminent colored pencil artist and instructor and author of several books. Check out <a href="http://www.ggart.biz/thumbs.htm" target="_blank">Gary's website</a>. We won't even go to the home page but directly to the gallery. Yes, <em>every image</em> is colored pencil.</span><br />

We got lots of one on one individual instruction and Gary was generous about sharing his philosophy, his expertise, and his skill with each of us.We all learned a great deal and had fun doing it. The young lady at the right, Melissa Davis, was far and away the best of us. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The new base is a non-skid table mount that doesn't require clamps. We had a great time but more importantly the new Orbital Easel base is a hit. By the way, that large painting at the back is about 3 feet wide and is colored pencil. Gary said it took more than 300 hours to complete.</div>

We use them in the Orbital Holding System and the Orbital Easel. But we came across a slight problem with one of them. Mind you, we have never heard of a customer having a problem, but at Grip-All Jaws we like to stay ahead of the curve. <br />
<br />
The problem is, there is a little pressure disc inside that the clamping screw pushes against to keep the head tight. We found that if you unscrew the clamp too far and bounce the base around a bit, that pressure disc can slip out of place and the clamp won't tighten properly. We fix them here before we ship them out but if you ever notice that your clamping screw doesn't hold tight enough, you may have a "slipped disc". Also, the knob will tend to bind against the housing. At any rate, it's an easy fix you can do yourself. Here's how:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdZi1FNDmCqHsKlWT2cRUm7u2DRVd2bwrGvzTQmXlVobYc5v5Gkgb0v2ByVZy5hpuYc91Rjz_3nw4bWKBgRrYUN47GYb_kK-YYx5XYXNHefXqwKLW18oN_lqHQh6_jB0bnqo4xATcEc-wb/s1600/base+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdZi1FNDmCqHsKlWT2cRUm7u2DRVd2bwrGvzTQmXlVobYc5v5Gkgb0v2ByVZy5hpuYc91Rjz_3nw4bWKBgRrYUN47GYb_kK-YYx5XYXNHefXqwKLW18oN_lqHQh6_jB0bnqo4xATcEc-wb/s200/base+2.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With the pressure disc removed, put a dollop of non-hardening adhesive in the corner of the split clamp. You don't need much. We use Liquid Nails Silicone Adhesive but you could use common rubber cement. But stay away from hardening glues like wood glues are Elmers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You can't really see it that well, but the pressure disc is curved and you have to reinstall it with the curve up. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The last point is when you reinstall the retaining ring, make sure that the ridge around the edge is down and against the housing. This one is upside down to show the difference, this side goes down.</div>

<br /></div>

It was held at Reed College in Portland, Oregon under the auspices of Calligraphy Northwest. This is a <em>big deal</em>. Reed College is a century-old temple of learning nestled in the trees of the Woodstock District of Portland -one of the oldest parts of the city.<br />

Powell's is the largest new and used bookstore in the world. If you have never experienced Powell's City of Books, it's four floors, at least, in what used to be a car dealership building. It's an entire block on Burnside and people like Chris, above, are not only helpful but can be essential. That info booth is just inside the door and you can get a map to the place (you'll need it). Great coffee shop in house BTW!<br />

Grip-All Jaws was specifically invited to this event by the organizers and they had us right next to the main entrance! We, of course were showcasing the <a href="http://www.orbitaleasel.com/" target="_blank">Orbital Easel</a>. Between classes and during lunch and dinner, people came in and tried out this new thing they had not seen before.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTK3B1I4b6XBq8pUEds2vX_vzwIjj5VkAtgoLCmWhagQnP2fmhSPF6FfhZMkXWQdoG2PMdUem9gCUfkrcDePxjfVIl5sRQi33Nu20sez_hxMZ4YJfOlvcpZHWXur5zLu63nQcRJslk-V93/s1600/Portland+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTK3B1I4b6XBq8pUEds2vX_vzwIjj5VkAtgoLCmWhagQnP2fmhSPF6FfhZMkXWQdoG2PMdUem9gCUfkrcDePxjfVIl5sRQi33Nu20sez_hxMZ4YJfOlvcpZHWXur5zLu63nQcRJslk-V93/s200/Portland+5.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We did pretty well and had a great repsonse. One of the attendees said that this new tilting and swiveling easel was what <em>everybody</em> was talking about in the classes. As one student put it, "This thing is all the buzz." Cool!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
One of the vendors there was truely amazing! <a href="http://www.timspens.com/index.html" target="_blank">Tim Leigh</a> is a master calligrapher and one of the nicest people in the world. He was there selling his folded nib pens. Check out his web site for the whole story. Calligraphy is a right-handed persuit but Tim is left-handed. He realized one day that, lefty or not, a 45 degree slant is the same right-side up or upside down. So he taught himself to write upside down - <em>and backwards! </em>Check out the video of him doing it.</div>

We have to say that we had not had such a good time as we had here in Portland. The organizers and tireless volunteers with <a href="http://www.2012calligraphyconference.com/" target="_blank">Calligraphy Northwest</a> were just the best. Check out the<a href="http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/pages/Calligraphy-Northwest-2012/103698386381933" target="_blank"> Facebook Page</a>. This conference was efficient, well organized, and the people were more helpful than we could have imagined. And to the lovely and talented Angelina who ferried us to and from the parking lot in the funky, steam-powered golf cart, a special thank you. To all the great folks with Calligraphy Northwest, a campus-sized thank you from all of us here at Grip-All Jaws.</div>Grip-All Jawshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17068170359099634682noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3388589565779140004.post-42766921215440157962012-06-27T16:19:00.002-07:002012-06-27T16:19:11.085-07:00Yaahr! Yo ho, me hearties, yo ho!Grip-All Jaws went to Rusty Scupper Pirate Daze in Westport, Wa June 22, 23, and 24. Saleswise, it proved - well - a complete failure. But in truth, the only people who sold anything were the food vendors. It also rained and the wind blew pretty much the whole time. But on Sunday the sun came out for a while and every Roger was feeling more jolly.<br />

These guys threw together a pirate song group and went up and down the street singing them. When they got to our end, there was a bit of a disagreement over what the words were. Swords were drawn but in a most un-pirate way they reached agreement and no blood was spilled.</div>

We got to talking and it occurred to us that artists use all sorts of cleaners and thinners and stuff like that there. So we decided to test a sample of the Orbital Easel material to see how well it stood up to some of that stuff. <br />
<br />
First of all water is pretty safe, obviously. However, watercolors will eventually stain the surface - as they do with anything else. So here is the result of exposure to several, and some rather nasty, chemicals that artists might use. Needless to say nothing we tried had any effect. Below is the list.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcLeKpihhhUF7C1G0eTNjP3ZiPTCv-tUFfAqrOU_WZAV8JhZ2zpVD5ONG0p77H1IKIL3wsEAimaBSNQs-HNV2fJ8ome2dwQUwGmus8hWNzNQzJ02-nAXvnrCZQwoo4qJscEMmpBqvwOJyb/s1600/EaselTest.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcLeKpihhhUF7C1G0eTNjP3ZiPTCv-tUFfAqrOU_WZAV8JhZ2zpVD5ONG0p77H1IKIL3wsEAimaBSNQs-HNV2fJ8ome2dwQUwGmus8hWNzNQzJ02-nAXvnrCZQwoo4qJscEMmpBqvwOJyb/s320/EaselTest.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
From top to bottom:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<strong>Denatured Alcohol</strong> - right out of the can.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<strong>Paint Thinner</strong> - The regular stuff you get at the hardware store.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<strong>Toluene</strong> - A standard thinner for oil-based paints.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<strong>MEK Methyl Ethyl Keytone</strong> - Pretty nasty stuff used to thin and remove resins used for fiberglass.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<strong>Naptha</strong> - A common cleaner and spot remover derived from natual gas.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<strong>Acetone</strong> - Another particularly nasty chemical, fingernail polish remover.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<strong>Lacquer Thinner</strong> - used to dilute oil-based lacquers and paints.</div>Grip-All Jawshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17068170359099634682noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3388589565779140004.post-10370124234105849932012-06-14T14:54:00.000-07:002012-06-17T19:02:21.119-07:00The Orbital Easel Tripod Base<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

As you can see, it's ideal for any sort of uneven ground when you are painting on location. You set the easel where it's most stable and your adjustment is in the Orbital Easel's tilt swivel base. <br />

The <a href="http://www.northwestdriftwoodartists.org/index.html" target="_blank">Northwest Driftwood Artists</a> were right in the middle of things. The Quilceda show includes a judged competition. This is a wizard head by Thomas Parkes of Richmond B.C. The celtic knot inlay appears to be maple. It's about 3 feet tall and really catches the eye. We're not sure who this actually is, but he probably played cards with Gandalf.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPe5fjk03MqtgPoLwM8KPqa98mF7_CywHDYfQJYJUuc90PnrA_uSImhi_oRpOTFthyyTxYMKNiT5TG7M-3tUr00rVzYqSp6qFSZ1ab8GhQVbn4Lq98zEL-deoSFXZHBmk7i-zaCnALLoJe/s1600/quilceda+8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPe5fjk03MqtgPoLwM8KPqa98mF7_CywHDYfQJYJUuc90PnrA_uSImhi_oRpOTFthyyTxYMKNiT5TG7M-3tUr00rVzYqSp6qFSZ1ab8GhQVbn4Lq98zEL-deoSFXZHBmk7i-zaCnALLoJe/s200/quilceda+8.jpg" width="115" /></a><br />

This owl was carved by Diana Galloway of Stanwood.We were impressed enough with the detail, especially the eyes. But she said that she carved him with a chainsaw! A very small chainsaw for sure, and over a long time but wow!<br />

This magnificent carving of Raven and the Box of Light was done by Harvey Nelson of Sammamish. The native people of the Pacific Northwest tell a story of how the world was always dark in the early times because Grandfather kept the sun hidden in a box. Raven tricked Grandfather into showing him the sun in the box. Raven flew off with it and put it in the sky to give people light. Ravens <em>are</em> smart after all.</div>

Grip-All Jaws didn't sell much at the Quilceda Carvers' show because the weekend was stunningly beautiful and warm, but no one did very well sales-wise. There wasn't the traffic there would have been on a rainy day. But sunshine, 70+ degrees, the beautiful Skykomish River - who could blame them.</div>

<br />
To help accomplish that we can borrow from the machine shop world. That would be a center finder.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXsCeOaRhK_GJ4Qyq-0-kkRuNfzCBFBgqKRZWk-AzQkv2b-jxqN4Xe8YA70Hgu_VmC1NevASm0xkkH4sPvsiHRg1bYo59C8ZqZbL9O6O6XkUW3iJ4kuIg0XGR70-GAkGvTWOU3yejC_LeG/s1600/CtrFndr1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXsCeOaRhK_GJ4Qyq-0-kkRuNfzCBFBgqKRZWk-AzQkv2b-jxqN4Xe8YA70Hgu_VmC1NevASm0xkkH4sPvsiHRg1bYo59C8ZqZbL9O6O6XkUW3iJ4kuIg0XGR70-GAkGvTWOU3yejC_LeG/s320/CtrFndr1.JPG" width="245" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A center finder is a hardened steel cylinder and the tip is held on with a tension spring.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEic7bwz8DGk24rQQqAIlEegP-ZLGBp-sEZQABvoH8M1T5FFZUHXaXnt2zM6yRh747J7-etXcc0ypYPP2YPLt2kJAiUMeKrTIj8pw14L6J7CnMyKO1aiEGSjl1PAcH8Hw4PhFUSTRazjnbfa/s1600/CtrFndr2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEic7bwz8DGk24rQQqAIlEegP-ZLGBp-sEZQABvoH8M1T5FFZUHXaXnt2zM6yRh747J7-etXcc0ypYPP2YPLt2kJAiUMeKrTIj8pw14L6J7CnMyKO1aiEGSjl1PAcH8Hw4PhFUSTRazjnbfa/s320/CtrFndr2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To use it, put it in a drill chuck. Push the tip off center and turn on the drill press at a low speed between 500 and 1000 RPM. You don't need any more than that.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLbL1FEMMCHnMZvq6ySVPhLaXgLORcIavvb8UogXAHgu3vC-vVNjnRrkcE13YRAUiFGN8Zygk23evTG0jo_6X_7ii8525ssGmXKiXlHegLWi3rGIYKtHYt_QNFvsr0hTPEABsulqXGfyLP/s1600/CtrFndr3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLbL1FEMMCHnMZvq6ySVPhLaXgLORcIavvb8UogXAHgu3vC-vVNjnRrkcE13YRAUiFGN8Zygk23evTG0jo_6X_7ii8525ssGmXKiXlHegLWi3rGIYKtHYt_QNFvsr0hTPEABsulqXGfyLP/s320/CtrFndr3.JPG" width="249" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With the chuck spinning, put slight pressure against the side of the tip until the wobble stops. I once worked with a guy that used his finger nail - he had 9 1/2 fingers. Use a screwdriver.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1ypyrzZ_0FajfoX8x-3AIZqBo0MyAu9DpSRPDFuBgbK13-QYdgGX9tAyGS7U27YMKadMdRWvaaWo0Y4qwRVqZAnOl1n45xN_svtF6Jx7UY8iBs0go6s4jAkXnWL7brVM0ahzOiHlbszJh/s1600/CtrFndr4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="288" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1ypyrzZ_0FajfoX8x-3AIZqBo0MyAu9DpSRPDFuBgbK13-QYdgGX9tAyGS7U27YMKadMdRWvaaWo0Y4qwRVqZAnOl1n45xN_svtF6Jx7UY8iBs0go6s4jAkXnWL7brVM0ahzOiHlbszJh/s320/CtrFndr4.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now the point is exactly on center with the axis of the spindle. Use it to align with your center punch mark or crosshairs. <br />If you look closely, you can see that the first attempt is a bit off center. I fixed that with a center finder.</div>

We don't know who the carver is nor the onlooker. Nor do they identify the really cool carving vise he is depending upon to securely and safely hold his work piece. This obvious oversight is excusable - - ok it isn't, and as R.P. Myers said, 'it's only advertising if they identify us." But it's way cool to see it anyway.Grip-All Jawshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17068170359099634682noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3388589565779140004.post-63984440819839542352012-02-11T15:14:00.000-08:002012-02-11T15:14:53.198-08:00Cheap workbenchWe were strolling through the local Re-Store - you know the place that sells used building materials from torn down houses. Anyway, they have loads of doors. This is a door that is 3' wide and 7' long, light, being hollow-core, strong, and flat. <em>AND</em> it was only $20.<br />

In my case, I set it on an old student desk and used the drawers for storage. Also I used the doorknob hole as a pass-through for cords.<br />
<br />
Now<em> that's</em> recycling!<br />

<br />
This is the famous Doane Spencer Deuce roadster and considered the first hot rod - at least officially. It was born in 1944 out of the imaginations of two classmates at Hollywood High School in Los Angeles, Doane Spencer and Jack Dorn. In 1941, Dorn bought a maroon 1932 Ford roadster. He painted it black, filled the grille shell, removed the fenders and running boards, dropped the front axle, installed a stock 1937 Ford flathead V-8, and added a DuVall split windshield. This car has become the definitive answer to what a deuce roadster is.<br />

This little honey is a '32 Deuce owned by Grip-All Jaws user Kathleen Robbins and her husband. We understand he did most of the work but if the Spencer Deuce is the definitive roadster, the definitive Deuce coupe might well look like this. Simple and elegant. However a 350 Chevy moves this one down the road.<br />
<br />
It's made exclusively out of hand-formed and laminated Live Oak rubbed with carbon black and India ink and the engine is lubricated with a mixture of boiled linseed oil and beeswax. <br />
<br />
Ok, we're kidding about that last bit but it's pretty cool anyway. BTW the Grip-All Jaws Orbital Holding System is a great way to hold say the body of a 4150 Holley carb while one installs a mod kit and drills jets and things like that. Just sayin'.<br />Grip-All Jawshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17068170359099634682noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3388589565779140004.post-81977069599800063172012-01-16T17:54:00.000-08:002012-01-16T17:54:29.745-08:00Coastal Carvers ShowOver MLK weekend we went to the <a href="http://home.teleport.com/~coastalcarvers/" target="_blank">Coastal Carvers' Show</a> in Lincoln City, Oregon. It's held at the Chinook Winds Resort and Casino. The weather was cold and wet - well, it <em><strong>is</strong></em> the Oregon Coast.<br />
This show is not a juried competition but a display of the art of carvers, sculptors and "<em>ligno-artisans"</em>. It's free to the public so it's always well attended. We often had a crowd around the booth especially when R.P. would start talking about how the Grip-All Jaws system was invented.<br />

<br />The featured carver this year was wildlife carver Ron Wright from Coos Bay, Oregon. Here are some of his lifelike birds. The leaves on the branch on the right are made of scraps of copper gutter material.<br />

This large carving is for a carosel that is being built in <a href="http://www.albanybrassring.com/" target="_blank">Albany Oregon</a>. It's a cerval cat and is in primer for now. Heck if they didn't, it would be like getting a guitar without strings. <br />
<br />
But we have seen situations where you may need special pins that are shorter or longer or just different.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLM0VRh8v8Dgexdva_hOukIZ-q9tKXXjwJOVUcz70qWoViUEK2qJk3F9KY1yPcaAClW1fviWGj_SbG-Hg5YkqXnhrZZDGlaEWW3yf-NoXP57BygRmxtTNJBFSiG731sVHbuwAoC8Or53iN/s1600/grip+pins.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLM0VRh8v8Dgexdva_hOukIZ-q9tKXXjwJOVUcz70qWoViUEK2qJk3F9KY1yPcaAClW1fviWGj_SbG-Hg5YkqXnhrZZDGlaEWW3yf-NoXP57BygRmxtTNJBFSiG731sVHbuwAoC8Or53iN/s320/grip+pins.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here are some that we have used in the past. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The ones of the left are 1/4 inch bolts with the heads cut off then they're covered with 1/4 inch I.D. fuel hose. When inserted into the arms of an orbital, they are about 2" long. You should super glue the hose on to keep it from creeping off.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The middle ones are short threaded studs dipped in liquid rubber grip stuff. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The ones on the right are 1/4 by 3/4 bolts with the heads dipped in more of the rubber stuff. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can also use long vaccuum caps that you can get at an auto supply store and glue them on to headless bolts or studs.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvKS0-BZsqqKe75eDWWAaHWIZLVdR1x8AiwRnZLaP0iCdxvzcm9lsAMEcEycNcIZm5atWsoL9Tl9Gsr0vdEy9Tc5gQbeWHTG6Pg2QYGPT2S6dviNiOYWxNk5qdRU8aCTr0nkMmmVS04YHA/s1600/Don+avery+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvKS0-BZsqqKe75eDWWAaHWIZLVdR1x8AiwRnZLaP0iCdxvzcm9lsAMEcEycNcIZm5atWsoL9Tl9Gsr0vdEy9Tc5gQbeWHTG6Pg2QYGPT2S6dviNiOYWxNk5qdRU8aCTr0nkMmmVS04YHA/s320/Don+avery+1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is a set we made for Don Avery at <a href="http://www.gripalljaws.com/don_avery.html" target="_blank">UCR Woods</a>. This is a special rig for his band saw mill and these are 3/8 dia. nylon rod. They hold really well to a big burl. Don slices burls and logs on his band saw and the nylon won't hurt the saw blade. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So remember, the Tilt-Top and Bench unit take 3/8 pins and the Orbital takes 1/4 inchers. Have at it!</div>

The old Lovell Auto Dealership has been turned into a local artist's market in the showroom and the shop area is now the Fort George Brewery... but I digress.<br />
<br />
We went down a block and strolled Commercial Street which was alive with folks a-shopping and strolling. We chanced upon the <a href="http://riverseagallery.com/" target="_blank">RiverSea Gallery</a> - it's right on the main drag. This shot was later in the evening with the lights on.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
The RiverSea has always been a world-class gallery in a beautiful old building but what did we notice but a display of the exciting works of carver and Grip-All Jaws user<a href="http://robartmancarving.com/" target="_blank"> Rob Artman</a>.</div>

They won't stand up on their own but put a bottle of wine in the hole and - like magic - it stands up.<div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQc0rQkM_ci-Fj6JgerMhbrBTNfXs9WPUq58KhvSu2GvZ7Z-Ss9gYmeyp5z1ZVAaL3FClI-nmA8nUKwRwr_9NST6FKzxW_uUX8vEK7hwsiD3kO3r46wLEYLDN3RKm0vTPAAPeKkPG8S43o/s1600/wine+balancer.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="216" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQc0rQkM_ci-Fj6JgerMhbrBTNfXs9WPUq58KhvSu2GvZ7Z-Ss9gYmeyp5z1ZVAaL3FClI-nmA8nUKwRwr_9NST6FKzxW_uUX8vEK7hwsiD3kO3r46wLEYLDN3RKm0vTPAAPeKkPG8S43o/s320/wine+balancer.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;">These are easy to make and you can make all kinds of shapes and use woods that are beautiful but too small for other things.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGHLnjdMfgcvIIp6MDKvuQqXY6YBvULAMc6PdPplGsT4bwEpaOD74bzsMjambkRqGGYiNH6vXjg-4MOcNOTeZHvU9YAO1yRHutDW3cEb0CoypWiKqWtgMhkssw-aXH_VgxcXojrY-WHpV8/s1600/wine+balancer+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGHLnjdMfgcvIIp6MDKvuQqXY6YBvULAMc6PdPplGsT4bwEpaOD74bzsMjambkRqGGYiNH6vXjg-4MOcNOTeZHvU9YAO1yRHutDW3cEb0CoypWiKqWtgMhkssw-aXH_VgxcXojrY-WHpV8/s320/wine+balancer+2.jpg" width="244" /></a></div>The important dimension is the distance from the edge point to center of the hole and the 36 degree angle. The 1 1/4 inch thickness is not mandatory but sort of a minimum. <br />

The idea is to get the center of gravity just right with a bottle in place. So you could change the angle but that would mean you have to change the distance to the center hole. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Experiment with some scraps and see what you can come up with. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
